Self-assesment

Teaching kindergartners was such a wonderful experience; I did my best on it! Putting into practice what I learned in this subject was not that difficult for me. At the beginning, I think that it was a little bit difficult to handle with 38 kids at the same time. It was kind of scary and challenging, but interesting at the same time. I like challenges, so I decided to do my best to teach my students.

I planned every single lesson with so much effort because I wanted my kids have a wonderful experience every single class. I looked for some songs, games, flashcards and all that stuff in order to bring them the best for their English classes. I went to teach them on Tuesday and Thursday, one hour each day, but I thought that it was not enough because we really enjoyed our time together. The weeks passed by, they showed me that they really liked English. I got along with them in such a fantastic way; I loved being with them. When I was teaching, I forgot all my problems; I did really love it! Each of my little troublemakers was very special; each one has a different quality that makes him or her unique. I had very kind, polite, smart, funny, and lovely students. They were always eager to do and to learn new things every class.

My last day with them was kind of sad but it also was very special. I remember that we did a review of all the topics we had studied. I asked them, and they answered very well. I noticed that they really learned. We were so happy; we were playing, singing and doing many things that day. Unfortunately, it was time to say goodbye to my babies! I brought them some candies; they were happy about it. They did not want to say goodbye, but they understood the situation. They said goodbye, but they also say “We love you, teacher Patty”. When I heard that, I was so grateful! I said “I love you, too! I will never forget you my kids.”

What I learned along the semester in this subject was very helpful. I think that I learned how to be a good teacher, but this was just the beginning. What is coming is going to be even more difficult that teaching children was, but I think that I will make it! I will become a great English teacher.

I can say that taking this subject was such a great adventure and a very fruitful experience. I have to say Thank you, teacher Edgar for being there giving us part of your wide knowledge about teaching. Thanks for your patience and for all you did for us, our students. It was a pleasure to be in Didactics of the English Language I with you.

Self-Assessment

When the semester started, I thought that Didactics would be very difficult and also I thought that I couldn't get it but at this time I can see that I've learned more than I imagined at first. Just thinking about my Teaching Practicum was scary because I was wondering  What am i going to do? and How am I going to do it?

Now I can see the things in a different way because now I know that I learned a lot. Maybe in the process I didn't notice about my progress but now i can say that I know more than five months ago. When I developed my Teaching Practicum I discovered many things in me, I discovered that I could do it and also I discovered that teaching is not an easy thing because it has a lot of obstacles but if we really want to become a teacher and also if we love what we are doing we going to face everything and we going to get the victory. In my Teaching Practicum I was teaching to others but also I was learning from others at the same time.

I know that I did not learn everything that a teacher has to know but I know that I am in a process and I have to keep doing my best everyday. I need to read more and also I have to keep knowing more about the teaching activity because I don't want to be someone who is called just  a "Teacher", I want to be a good teacher, a leader and a mentor.

Self-Assessment

Teaching kindergartners is tough, way more than I thought.

When I started doing my teaching practicum, I was nervous almost all the time. I have always thought that children don't like me and sometimes I don't like them either. That's why I can say that being a kindergarten teacher was a revealing experience. At the beginning a was really insecure about my teaching skills. I used to think that my students were bored in my classes and that my teaching practicum was going to be an endless pain, but then I realized it was not like that.

After a few classes I started knowing my students, and they were actually really cute. At the end of my practicum, I kind of fell in love with some of them. They were so polite and cute with me almost all the time; they seemed very excited about the English classes and they learned a lot. A couple of times, it was hard for me to find interesting activities to do with them, and of course I had to face a lot of troubles. Eventually I learned how to handle almost every situation; The main teacher of that classroom was really helpful; she used to give me pieces of advice when I made mistakes, and I really appreciated that.

For me, everything I went trough my practicum was an opportunity to learn something new. I think that I have grown as a person and most of all as a teacher in these couple of months. I discovered some skills that I didn't know I have, and let me tell it was quite a surprise.

Learning a lot of things in my Didactics class and being able to put all that into practice in my teaching practicum was amazing. Now I have a whole repertoire of children songs, tales and stuff that I know is going to be very helpful in the future. I know that I was not perfect teacher; I made lots of mistakes, but I learned from them.

Some pieces of advice that I can give to people who are going to do their teaching practicum in a kindergarten as well, are:
1. Never, ever, ever give candies to children, or you are going to die trying to give a lesson.
2. Try as hard as you can to be prepared for anything you could imagine. Like back up activities, prices, routines, surprises or anything that could help you.
3. Don't be afraid of being strong because if you are to sweet and calm with your kids, they are going to take advantage of it.
4. Be confident. Don't feel awkward singing and dancing children songs, doing mimics, playing fool or whatever outside of your comfort zone. If you feel embarrassed, your kids are going to notice, and they are going to react in the same way.
5. Don't be afraid of asking for help. Other teachers can be understanding and can give you an extra hand if you need it.

As a conclusion, being a teacher is a great and demanding job but also very rewarding. There is nothing like watching a child smile at you because you did a good job. I certainly know that this is just the beginning of a great journey, and I can't wait to see what's coming.

Self-assessment

Self-assessment

The semester has passed so quickly; I did not notice how much I learned in this course. I'm very proud of myself because I made my first teaching practicum. To be honest, at the very beginning of the semester, I thought that Didactics was a boring subject, but later, I changed my mind. I have learned many and interesting things that help to be better at teaching. Those things must be taken into account by ourselves as future English teachers. I know that I did not get everything in the classes, but I need to work on those things.

I need to read more the chapters we have been studying. Everything is important, and it would be helpful in the future. The topics were clear and interesting. I enjoyed most of the classes. This subject has helped me to understand that to be a teacher is not easy; nevertheless, I need to fight to achieve my goals as a student, and one of this goals is to graduate form the university as a teacher of English.

Everything was terrific for me; I do not t have any complain against anyone. All the topics we studied were excellent. It was a pleasure to be part of Didactics 1 with Teacher Edgard who is an excellent mentor. Thanks teacher Edgard for your support and dedication with us.

Self-Assesment

First of all, I would like to start saying that for me the teaching practicum was a very good experience even though I realized that the fact of being a teacher requires all of effort and energy.

At the beginning I was very worried because I thought that for men was not that easy to handle with children as it is for women, but later I realized that it is not the gender what matters, It is the effort and time you spend preparing your classes and the love and caring you show to your students.

Teaching is not only a job in which we take place in front of all our students, but also it is an opportunity to develop our skills and the knowledge that we have. In my teaching practicum I had to face different scenarios, and then I learned that we as teacher have to take advantage of the knowledge that we have been acquiring in didactics class this semester.

Sometimes I had to improve my classes on the road because of the behavior of my students. They made a lot of troubles, but fortunately I knew how to manage and  teach them. In my opinion, I didn't do an excellent job, but I tried to do my best every single time that I went to the school. My students were happy all the time, they worked a lot and they did it well.

My recommendations for the ones who teach young learners are the following:

·      First: try to be a dynamic teacher because it helps a lot when you teach, that gives you the power to catch the attention of your students.
·      Second: be always prepared for the worst scenarios in the classroom because that is going to be the key for you to handle a difficult situation.
·    Third: you have to take into account that you have to use the appropriate level of language for your students, and that is a better way for they to understand the topic you are teaching.

Honestly this was an experience that left me a lot of nice memories, I learned a lot of new things that I know are going to be very useful in the future. As teachers we can change the future trough children.

Movie guide of "Beyond the Blackboard"

-Discuss Stacey’s first week at the school. How were The School with No Name and its students different from what she expected? What was her reaction to these differences?

Stacey expected to find a regular classroom maybe with kids of the same age, desks, chairs, books, a lesson plan to follow, but she was very surprised when she found a lot of homeless kids, a dirty and messy classroom, rats, a train that passes near the school and teenagers smoking. The school was not an actual school and the students were not students either. She felt horrible, disappointed and pathetic by pretending to be a teacher in a place that was not a school.

-In the beginning of the film, Stacey said “school was a safe place with a glimpse of who I wanted to be.” How did her determination change the environment of the shelter school and her students?

Stacey’s determination changed the whole concept of school that they had on the shelter. When the kids and parents realized that she had a real interest in them, they felt comfortable and started cooperating with the education. She made them see how important knowledge is and put all her effort in teaching well.

-Stacey tired to relate to her new students by showing them a photo album of her family and talking about her life. The kids could not relate to her pictures and  experiences. Why not?

In the movie we could see that the students were facing different life circumstances for example some of them came from broken homes, some others had addict fathers, etc. So they were facing a lot of emotional and physically adversities because of the poverty and that makes the hardest education because sometimes children have to work and make some money or go to streets to ask for money so they miss the school that's why the education in a poor area is too difficult.

-Discuss some of the circumstances of the students. What types of adversities     did they face physically and emotionally? How did their poverty make learning   more difficult?

As we could see, the classroom and also the school in generally weren't a worthy place for teaching. At the beginning Stacey Bess was disappointed with the place where she had to teach because she was expecting for a better place but she had a passion and love for teaching and that made her work hard and also spent her own money for getting some items to help her in the teaching process. We could see that she really wanted to teach because she loved that and that love made her love the children and also she did her best for a better life for her students.

-The classroom initially came with almost no supplies and little support from        school board officials and reluctant parents. Despite these challenges, Stacey    Bess was able to create a warm, safe place for children to learn. In addition, she  was able to earn the support and respect of parents and students.

Stacey tried a lot of things to solve the problems that she was facing for teaching. She tried to do different things, some didn't result and some others did. She used her creativity to get her students attention but some of the students' parents were in disagreement. So, she made challenges to the parents and also she did that parents commit to help for their children's education. To overcome the lack of supplies, she had to spend her own money even though when she was facing some economic problems in her home but for love to teaching  she didn't care about.

-Resourcefulness is the ability to find a way to solve problems in a difficult    situation. What creative solution did Stacey find to transform the school with no  name? How did she overcome the lack of supplies, environmental distractions    and  other issues?

She thought about reorganize, and paint the classroom. She began to do it alone, but when people of the shelter saw that she was working hard, they decided to help her.  To overcome the lack of supplies, she had to spend her own money even though when she was facing some economic problems in her home but for love to teaching she didn't care about them.

-Poverty impacts people of all ages, races and backgrounds. The reasons for     people being at the shelter are as different as each individual. What are some of the  reasons for characters in the film coming to the shelter?

Some of them came to the shelter because they did not have a house for living. Two children were there because a police founded them in the vault of their house. Their mother used to leave them there when she was with men at home.

-The previous teacher placed “shame names” on the board and played movies all day to keep the kids occupied. The students and parents were initially wary of Stacey because they thought she would be the same as her predecessor. What actions did she take to earn their trust? How did trust play a role in the schools’ success?

Stacey tried to be nice with their students and to listen to their problems and needs. She showed them that she cared about their future; that’s why she remodeled the school to have a better place for their kids to learn. Parents noticed that Stacey was not the same as her predecessor, and they started thinking that she was right doing what she did with the children. Trust played a very important role because trusting each other they could work effectively. Students learned a lot from Stacey, but she also learned a little bit more from their students.

-Discuss how respect or lack of respect was shown in the film. Why is respect      important in school setting?

Lack of respect was evident when teacher Stacey arrived “school” and go out to the playground, where children were in recess, to tell them that was time to go back to the classroom. Two boys were saying things like “Where’s the witch?”  “The witch has gone, but the clown arrived.” Both were saying that the new teacher was like a clown for the “sweet” attitude he showed when she was calling them to enter.  Another example of lack of respect is when teacher Stacey was in a test with the children and, suddenly, a mother opened the door and entered very angry to pick up her children because they had not done the chores.  The mother did not respect neither the teacher’s presence nor was she in class with the kids. Another lack of respect was when a boy did not obey what Stacey asked him to do. She asked him to take a sit, but what the boy did was move his buttocks in front of her, mocking her order.

To establish respect in the classroom is something vital for the learning process. Children have to obey what their teacher asks them to do. As students are still very young, they should be taught how to respect everyone including their peers and especially other higher authorities like their teachers. Respecting each other will provide students an opportunity to understand each other to prevent arguments and conflicts from happening. Once respect is established among students, the school would be a conductive environment for students to study. We believe that students should not bow their heads to teachers whenever they are present but they have to greet them politely as this would nurture positively their character through good manners.

-Stacey encourages the students to think of words to put on the board to describe their feelings. By giving these feelings names, the children were able to express themselves more clearly? What vocabulary words were used? Why were these words so important to the children?

We consider that when she started the dynamic of giving feeling names children thought if they had been in that way once in their lives. They liked to share their experiences with the whole class, and they tried to put into practice what the papers said. The vocabulary words used were some adjectives and values.  Also, they we were eager to learn something new every day from their teacher. Since the day they did that dynamic in class, they behaved better and took care about their learning, their class, their school.

    - Describe Stacey Bess

Stacey Bess was a 24-year-old teacher who had very high expectations about working in a school. Once, she went to Dr. Boss to get her first job as teacher. He assigned her in a school located in a shelter, for homeless children. Since she arrived to that “school”, she felt very disappointed because it was not what she expected. Kids and their parents were so bad mannered; the shelter was a complete mess! When she finished her first day at that school, she arrived home crying. She was completely stunned by the situation she was facing; she did not know what to do to teach those bad mannered kids. She thought about giving up, but, later on, she realized that what she had to do was give all her effort, enthusiasm and knowledge to teach those kids. When she changed her attitude, things changed in that place too. He showed her real teacher attitude, and children began to love learning. She discovered that what matters is not the resources you have to do your work well; what matters is the passion with you do your work.

-What struck you about the movie?
There was something interesting that caught our attention, for example, the way that the teacher faced those bad situations.  At the very beginning of the movie, Stacy was on cloud nine because she would teach for the first time. Then, she was surprised when everything changed. The school where Stacy started to teach was terrible, and she felt very bad because everything was against her.

We really liked how Stacy became optimistic and started working on every single detail in that environment. She began to work on everything, for instance, the kids, the school, kids’ parents and learning process. Stacy showed that every single dream we have can come true. She reached what she wanted. The movie can teach us a lesson which is that we never give up in our dreams. Probably, we as future teachers will face similar situations, and we will need to fight against everything; we will need to fight for our dreams.

-What do you think  the school did not have a name?

We think that the school did not have a name because it was not consider as a school. We noticed how people did not care about that establishment. The people just used that establishment  to hang up, to drink, to watch TV, but not to study any subject.

-Would the school have had an easier transition to success if it did have a name?

We think that a name is not necessary to succeed. There are many school that are well known in El Salvador, and that does not mean that are the best schools. The most important thing to take into consideration is the learning process, for example, there are schools in which they are not well known, but they have an effective learning process.

Talking about the movie, if Stacy proved that everything can change by working hard, we can be sure that a school’s name cannot assure that a school will be successful.

     -Name a school.

.   We would name our own school “Learning by doing”. We would call it in this way because we know that we learn by practicing everything in which we are involved. We would try to look for the best strategies, techniques and methods to have the best school with an excellent teaching learning process. That could be excellent for everyone who wants to study there.

Comparing traditional teaching and 21st century teaching

Top ten traits of the 21st century ELT practitioner

-          Educator as a couch, guide, resource, and lead learner
-          Focus on the student’s point of view
-          Dialogue with his students
-          Let student question
-         Re-think how the students interpret his lesson
-          Let his students contribute with their learning
-          Use technology
-          Ongoing, formative assessments for and by students to increase learning
-          Facilitate learning
-          Failures and mistakes are seen as part of the learning process

As everybody knows, there were different kind of teachers back then. They had different characteristics even they had taught in different ways . Many people say that teachers were so strict  back then ,and now, they are not. That is  something that many people say, but the reality is different. Nowadays, education has changed over the years in different ways. As some characteristics above, teachers are like a father or mother for many children who are in any school; children tend to have a second family in school.

We, as future teachers, need to know that all those teachers who used to be the center of the class are disappearing. Now, everything has different purposes, for example, the learner is the most important in the learning process, and teachers need to be the guide of that learning process. There are so many resources like technology which can be useful when teaching and we have to take into consideration; to guide a class is not easy, but in this 21st century, not only teachers but also students have changed.

Teachers were considered as expert. They were like the person who knows everything; in fact, they were back then. Students were not so important than nowadays; in our opinion, the learning process, has improved because of people who are in charge of teaching are making different things for improving students’ learning process. We know there are exceptions, and it’s not a guarantee that every single teacher would be as good as we want them to be.

Traditional teaching was a different way to teach; teachers who belonged to that way of teaching used to teach by pushing their students all the time. Probably, students were treating like slaves, or they felt in that way. Therefore, now, almost all teachers try to use new techniques to encourage students to take advantage of their learning process by putting into practice as much abilities as students can. By away, we got a big challenge in this new century; we will treat students of a new generation. We must be careful because technology could be useful, but also it could be a disadvantage. All students are using technology not only for studying but also for wasting time. As a conclusion, we, as future teachers, need to follow and look for the best techniques to teach because the new generations will be in our hands.

Describing the salient traits between NESTs and non-NESTs

NESTs                                                                     Non-NESTs
Focus on:                                                                 Focus on:
-Fluency                                                                    -Accuracy
-Meaning                                                                   -Form
-Language use                                                           -Grammar rules
-Oral skills                                                                 -Printed word

NESTs and non-NESTs have many differents, but they got just one purpose; that purpose is called “English Teaching Learning.” Both NESTs and non-NESTs are good teachers of English. Some are better at doing an specific thing, for example, NESTs are very good at pronunciation and fluency and, non-NESTs are very good at teaching grammar and finding mistakes. students. For us, both can be excellent teachers; the most important is to give a adecuate model Also, NESTs know a lot of vocabulary, but non-NESTs can provide a better teaching  model. As we know, each type of teacher provides a different model of teaching.

Many people think that NESTs are better teacher because they are native English speakers, but that is not always true. If a person is a native English speaker, it does not mean that person will be a good teacher.

Non-NESTs are focusing on things that NESTs do not pay attention too much. In my opinion, to be a teacher means to be a leader for many students; that is why, different learning models can help students to find their own way to learn a spoken language in this case English. In some countries, schools prefer to have NESTs because schools think that NESTs are better teacher of English. Although we are not teachers yet,  we can say that there are excellent non-NESTs who care about their students learning process. These non-NESTs are excellent at teaching, and their fluency and grammar are excellent. Moreover, every single teacher has to have many ways to teach that give student the opportunity to develop their skills to communicate in an effective way.
